What is Pilates?

Pilates is a group of exercises developed by Joseph H. Pilates in the early 1900s. These were mat-based exercises and equipment based exercises.

These Pilates exercises encourage the body to develop balance (through core strength), flexibility and body awareness.

Although Joseph Pilates’ original book featuring a series of 34 mat movements appear quite strong, these Pilates exercises have been modified and adapted to suit today’s postures.

Therefore Pilates exercises work for anyone from young to old, athletic people to those who have never exercised before.

FAQ’s

Is Pilates just for women?

Not at all. Pilates was developed by a man. Joseph was a gymnast, a boxer and a military trainer in his youth. The benefits of Pilates exercises are not gender biased. Anyone can gain great benefits by practicing Pilates correctly. I am seeing more and more men joining the classes and reaping the benefits from the Pilates exercises.

Do I need to bring anything?

No. I teach Pilates matwork and have enough mats and props for everyone. You are welcome to bring your own mat (if you have one) and a small towel to use as a prop if you prefer.

What will I need to wear?

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move and stretch fully. I will need to see how you hold your body and how your muscles are engaging. So while loose is ok, baggy isn’t.

Pilates is performed with bare feet, so no fancy trainers required. If you prefer not to bare your feet, socks may be worn.
